Monkwood Green

Monkwood Green is a small, rural hamlet and area of common land situated within the parish of Grimley in Worcestershire. Characterised by its open green space, scattered dwellings, and surrounding agricultural landscape, it retains a distinctly historic and tranquil character typical of traditional English commons. The green itself serves as a focal point for the area, contributing to local biodiversity and offering an important visual and environmental asset. Monkwood Green forms part of the wider Parish heritage, reflecting longstanding patterns of rural settlement and land use within the Severn Valley. Monkwood Green is a registered Common and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It is known for its rich biodiversity, including endangered plant and insect species and is owned and managed by Grimley Parish Council. The area features a variety of habitats making it a significant ecological site for conservation efforts. There are by-laws governing its use and the Parish Council also has a separate policy to govern activities on all land that it manages.

The nearby Monk Wood is owned and managed by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust. "Monk Wood is a semi-natural ancient woodland that is renowned for its ground flora & butterfly species. Land at the adjacent Green Farm is undergoing restoration and recreation of historic habitats, connecting Monkwood to the wider landscape" (WTT website).

The parish council logo shows the miniature ‘gorse type’ plant Petty Whin (Genista anglica) which is found on Monkwood Green Common. It is a plant of acidic heaths and moors which has undergone serious decline over the past century.

It is that time of year again where quotations are invited to mow and bale Monkwood Green Common and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) this year, in a cut of areas of the Common/SSSI in TWO PARTS. Monkwood Green Common is for the most part designated by Natural England a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Consequently, there are restrictions on how and when the Parish Council can management mow the whole area. Please ensure that you note the specific areas to be mowed and the timings set by Natural England for this work. If you have any questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact myself as Parish Clerk. The parish council can, if asked, be flexible up to a point to meet contractor needs and the unpredictability of the weather. As usual though, all this is within the requirements set by Natural England. Deadline for quotations 12th July 10am please. Please send all quotations to the Parish Clerk
