Reducing Fire Risks in the Countryside
Follow the Countryside Code, avoid open fires except in designated areas, and always extinguish smoking materials completely before disposal
Key Prevention Measures
- Avoid open fires in the countryside unless in safe, designated areas
- Do not use barbecues. If you use barbecues only do so where permitted and follow manufacturer’s safety instructions.
- Extinguish cigarettes fully before disposal; never throw them from vehicles or on the ground
- Dispose of all litter properly, especially glass bottles, which can focus sunlight and start fires
- Do not release sky lanterns — they can drift into flammable areas
- Keep water or a hose nearby when using barbecues or campfires
- Never leave fires unattended and ensure ashes are cold before disposal
If You See a Fire
- Move to a safe location upwind and call 999 immediately — do not assume someone else has reported it
- Give an accurate location (e.g., via Ordnance Survey app or what3words)
- Do not attempt to fight wildfires that cannot be controlled with a bucket of water
- Follow instructions from fire and rescue services and local authorities
Why It Matters
Wildfires can destroy habitats, farmland, and homes, and are often caused by human activity. In 2025, the UK saw its worst year for wildfires on record. This year is heading for the same and worse. Small actions — like proper cigarette disposal and using designated BBQ areas — greatly reduce the risk.
